The primary objective of this Wing is to facilitate devotees’ spiritual progress based on Swami’s teachings by conducting spiritual activities in accordance with the organization’s guidelines.
Spiritual Care
As the tree grows, the roots must also grow inwards. The growth of the tree is dependant on the roots inside the ground. The Spiritual wing of SSBCBK forms the foundation for achieving the objective of the Organization, namely, helping the spiritual aspirant realize the inherent Divinity. Thus, the spiritual wing undertakes activities that are targeted to arouse inspiration and inward vision with a view to developing the urge to connect with the inner core.
The activities undertaken by the spiritual wing include the following:
Bhajans are conducted at our centre every Sunday evening from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM, in order to provide participants opportunities to engage in congregational singing of the Lord’s name. Sai Bhajans are simple both in tune and in meaning, and have the innate power to provide peace and spiritual energy to participants.
Regular practice sessions are held at the centre to help aspiring bhajan singers (of all ages) hone their abilities, under the guidance of our Bhajan coaches.
Study Circles allow for the individual to probe and explore spiritual topics and concepts, and come away with a better understanding of them.
Swami says, “What is a study circle? It is not just reading books. Study circle means taking a point and each person discussing what is the meaning of the point to them. Each person gives their point of view, and finally values are derived from this. If there is just reading, there is doubt. But if each one gives his view, doubts will be answered. This does not mean only just reading and discussing and taking information into the head, but also putting into practice what is learnt.”
Study Circle activities help devotees’ progress further through the exchange of knowledge and experiences with other devotees.
At first, set a few minutes every day for meditation, and extend the time as you feel the bliss that you get. Let it be in the hours before dawn. This is preferable because the body is refreshed after sleep, and the dealings of daytime will not yet have impinged on you. Have a lamp or a candle before you with an open, steady, and straight flame. Sit in front of the candle in the lotus posture or any other comfortable sitting position. Look on the flame steadily for some time, and closing your eyes try to feel the flame inside you between your eyebrows. Let it slide down into the lotus of your heart, illuminating the path. When it enters the heart, imagine that the petals of the lotus open out by one, bathing every thought, feeling, and emotion in the light and so removing darkness from them. There is no space for darkness to hide. The light of the flame becomes wider and brighter. Let it pervade your limbs. Now those limbs can never indulge in dark, suspicious, and wicked activities; they have become instruments of light and love. As the light reaches up to the tongue, falsehood vanishes from it. Let it rise up to the eyes and the ears and destroy all the dark desires that infest them and which lead you to perverse sights and childish conversation. Let your head be surcharged with light and all wicked thoughts will flee there from. Imagine that the light is in you more and more intensely. Let it shine all around you and let it spread from you in ever widening circles, taking in your loved ones, your kith and kin, your friends and companions, your enemies and rivals, strangers, all living beings, the entire world.
Since the light illumines all the senses every day so deeply and so systematically, a time will soon come when you can no more relish dark and evil sights, yearn for dark and sinister tales, crave for base, harmful, deadening toxic food and drink, handle dirty demeaning things, approach places of ill-fame and injury, or frame evil designs against anyone at any time. Stay on in that thrill of witnessing the light everywhere. If you are adoring God in any form now, try to visualize that form in the all-pervasive light. For Light is God; God is Light.
Bhajans are organised on request. The objective is to create positive vibrations in a home. It is also an effective activity to bring members closer to one another. It is an opportunity to celebrate family spiritual events.
Festivals are intended to be used for the exclusive worship of the Divine, to enjoy the bliss of that devotion, and to overcome pain and sorrow. These holy days were instituted for the purpose of getting rid of ignorance and cultivating right knowledge, the higher wisdom and cosmic consciousness. Festivals are celebrated on a grand scale at the Bandar Klang Centre with many cultural activities and presentation. The festivals always end with the serving of vegetarian food.
Yoga Classes are also conducted free at the Bandar Klang Centre. Yoga is aimed to unite the mind, the body and the spirit. Yoga views the mind & body as one and it is said if the right yoga kit and tools are taken to the right environment, one can find harmony and heal oneself. Yoga, therefore, is considered therapeutic. It makes the body more flexible and helps one to relax even in the midst of a stress stricken environment. Yoga Classes are a weekly activity at the Bandar Klang Centre conducted by a devotee and is open to the public as well.
Sri Sathya Sai Baba has cultured us with the ultimate benefit of vedam chanting. The prime significance of vedam lies in the fact that the truths and thoughts they contain are eternal. As per Sri Sathya Sai Baba, the Vedas offer truths into the nature of the Self that is necessary to gain liberation.
Excerpts from Vedas are chanted regularly at the centre during the bhajans and in all special spiritual events. This helps to purify the mind and re energise oneself and thereby sanctify the environment, starting with oneself. Vedam chanting is also taught to the children attending the Sai Spiritual Education classes at the Centre.
Swami says, “Some take a longer route, some reach quickly, but all are on the way. Therefore, Bhajan has to start in childhood and has to continue. It must be the constant companion of man, his solace and strength. Do not postpone it to old age, for it is the essential food for the mind.”
This quote indicates the emphasis Swami places on Bhajan singing from a young age and hence the BBTP initiative is to inculcate the basic techniques of bhajan singing in the Balvikas children who are bhajan enthusiasts.
As part of the BBTP initiative, children learn the lyrics, the tune, the meaning, the beat and much more through videos and fun activities such as games and stories. The session is conducted by the Bhajan Team members of our centre.
Live in Love, live with Love, move with Love, speak with Love, think with Love, and act with Love, this is the best and most fruitful spiritual endeavor.
Code of Conduct
The charter of the Sai Organization says that every member should undertake sadhana (spiritual discipline) as an integral part of daily life and abide by the following Code of Conduct:
|
Guiding Principle
Have a sense of pride in your motherland. Just as your mother has given birth to you, so too the land has given birth to you. Whatever country you belong to, you should have a sense of patriotism. You should not indulge in criticizing other countries or people belonging to other nations. Having trust and faith in your own country, you won’t try to put down any other country. Never bring grief or sorrow to your country. To have pride in your own motherland is important.
Honor and respect all religions as pathways to God.
Never have hatred toward any religion. Honour and respect all religions equally. Even as you are citizens of your motherland but respect all countries, also respect all religions equally
Love all humanity as part of your family.
Develop a sense of the brotherhood of man. Look upon each person as your own brother or sister. There is only one caste, the caste of humanity. All of us belong to the human race, so everyone is equal. Therefore, love each one equally.
Keep home and surroundings clean.
Keep your own house and its surroundings pure and clean. This hygiene will keep you healthy and benefit your worldly life.
Help the needy with food, clothing and shelter. Help them become self-reliant when possible.
Be discriminating when dispensing charity. In the name of charity or philanthropy, we tend to do injustice to one’s country. Charity does not mean that the land should be full of beggars. We can provide some support and means for the beggars, but provide food, clothing and other conveniences in such a way that you are not encouraging laziness and begging.
Be examples of honesty. Do not participate in any corruption such as bribery.
Never give or take a bribe. Giving bribes, or accepting bribes, is contrary to the very name of the Sri Sathya Sai Organizations. Bear this in mind continuously.
Curb jealousy, hatred and envy.
We must seek ways to solve difficulties such as hatred, envy and jealousy. To curb this sense of envy and jealousy, we must develop a broader outlook. Do not differentiate on the basis of race, caste, creed, or country. Follow your cultural and religious customs in your own home, but do not attempt to impose them on society. Rather than this, love each person as your own brother or sister, not seeing him or her as belonging to another creed, religion, or country.
Develop self-reliance.
Members of the Sri Sathya Sai Organizations should do things by themselves; they should not depend on others. You may be very wealthy and have servants and assistants to help in a few tasks, but your own work you must do yourself. If you wish to be of service to society, serve yourself first. One who will not serve society has no right to belong to a Sri Sathya Sai Organization.
Observe your country’s laws and be exemplary citizens.
You should never go against the law of the land. We must follow the letter of the law. The members of the Sri Sathya Sai Organizations should follow the law in spirit also and be models for the government.
Adore God, abhor sin.
You must love God and avoid sin. Love God incessantly. As long as you keep committing sins, God will never be yours.
Origination of the “Sai Ram” Greeting among Devotees
Devotees of Sathya Sai Baba frequently say “Sai Ram” when greeting each other. The beautiful inner meaning of this tradition originating with Sathya Sai Baba.
When you meet each other, do not shout hello or bye-bye, or some silly chatter.
Let the moment of meeting be sanctified by the remembrance of God.
Say, Ram Ram, or Om, or Hari Om, or Sai Ram.
The quote from Swami (above) states in a nutshell why we greet someone with “Sai Ram”. It is a remembrance of God, the one God that IS the other person and ourselves.
In Bavaria, southern Germany, many people greet each other with “Gruess Gott”, which means “Greet God”. Same idea!
When greeting someone with “Sai Ram”, try to think of greeting not only the worldly body that you see but our SAI in that person. We could use any name of God; it is the intent and feeling that counts. We have happened to choose “Sai Ram” because of the universal appeal of that name as a mantra. (Some devotees do repetition of the name —namasmarana— with “Om Sri Sai Ram”, repeating “Om Sri” on the inbreath and “Sai Ram” on the outbreath.)
The word “Sai” can be split into two: “Sa” and “Ai”. We have been told that “Sa” means universal father, while “Ai” stands for universal mother. Sathya Sai Baba, our Sai, is our mother and father.
“Ram” can be viewed as a shortening of “Rama”. One interpretation of this word is that “Ra” is the Fire Principle, which burns all to ash, while “ma” stands for maya or illusion, so together, they mean the destruction of illusion.
Sai Baba has said also that “Rama” means “He who pleases, fills with bliss, causes delight”, that “Rama” means the joy that comes from love.
Bhajan Guidelines
‘BHAJAN’ or ‘NAAMSAMARNA’ means group devotional singing of the glory of god. When and wherever his glory is sung, he is always there. Unless you sing bhajans for your own ecstacy, you cannot bring joy to others, thus preventing them from sharing ‘ANANDA’ i.e. bliss. With each bhajan sung the mind must be rendered purer, free from passion and stronger in faith.
When the chanting of the Name is done in community singing, it should be in a form in which the entire group can participate easily. The tune, the rhythm, etc. should be such that all can follow the bhajan. If the lead singer takes up a song that is not familiar to others, the response from the group will be poor. There will be no enthusiasm or genuine participation. Their minds will be distracted. When all the devotees participate in the bhajan, the vibrations that are produced will generate joy and harmony.
How should we participate in bhajans?
Everyone, whether well-versed in music or not, should listen attentively to the singer and try to repeat the words of the song with feeling. Some persons attending bhajans do not move their lips at all. They may say that they are singing the songs mentally within themselves. This is not proper. If you have devotional feeling, it should be expressed by the tongue joining in the bhajan. Only then can it be called Sankirtana – singing in unison with others. You must sing the names aloud, full throated, as far as the voice can reach. Only then the Divine will respond in full measure and shower His grace. No one will go to the rescue of a drowning man if his cries are feeble. Only when he cries aloud at the top of his voice will the cries be heard and people will rush to save him.
What can be achieved by singing bhajans?
Today, all the five elements in the world – space, air, fire, water and the earth are polluted. You cannot get pure water or pure air. The sounds you hear are impure. The earth is polluted. The Kali Yuga has become Kalmasha Yuga (the age of impurity). To purify all these, the only means is chanting the names of the Lord.
The recitation of the names of the Lord will help to purify the atmosphere as a result of the sacred sound waves getting absorbed in the atmosphere. The power of sound waves is evident from the way radio waves are transmitted and received over long distances. The atmosphere that has been polluted by impure sound waves can be purified by the chanting of the Divine Name. Likewise, sacred thoughts, pure speech and pure actions will purify other polluted elements. There is no better purifying agent than this. Crores (one crore is ten million) are being spent to purify the Ganges water. Of what use is this exercise if the Ganges continues to be polluted by the discharge of drainage water into the river? First prevent the flow of filthy effluents into the Ganges. In the same manner, the evil thoughts arising in the mind should be diverted; and it should be filled with pure, Godly thoughts by reciting the Divine name.
Suprabhatham literally means ‘good morning’! (Su, good, prabhatham, morning or dawn). In Western culture, people wish each other “Good Morning.” But in Indian culture this is not done, because it is considered to be the equivalent of pouring water on the leaves of a tree. For effective watering of a tree, water must be given to the roots of a tree. The root of the Tree of Life is God. So God, who is latent and immanent in all, is sought out and made patent and public. In this prayer God is visualised as sleeping and then woken up and wished “Good Morning.” Of course the Divinity in us is never asleep; but unless we take at least one step towards activating it, it does not manifest itself. Such a step is the singing of Suprabhatham, and putting into practice its implications.
The first two stanzas of any Suprabhatham song exhort the sleeping God in us to arise (uththista). This word is repeated four times. First, God is requested to get up in order to engage in Divine duties for the day (Kartavyam Daiva Mahnikam). Second, it reminds God that He is not an ordinary person, but one with responsibilities for the whole world. The last “please get up” addresses Him as the ‘Most Merciful One’ and requests Him to get up for the sake of the welfare of the world as a whole (Loka Mangalam).
When we pray thus, the Divinity inherent in us is manifested not for the sake of individual material welfare, but for the purpose of the welfare of the whole world or at least for the integration of the whole personality: physical, mental and spiritual.
After the first two stanzas others follow, each of them ending with wishing God “Good Morning.” The Venkatesa Suprabhatham, which is the most famous Suprabhatham song in India, says its first “Good Morning” to the consort of God, the Goddess who personifies Mercy and Compassion, and is said to be resident in His chest region. In the later stanzas, Lord Venkateswara of the Seven Hills (Tirupathi) is recognised as one of the forms of the omnipotent, and omnipresent, omniscient God – the originator and sustainer of the creation, the protector of His Devotees. He is also recognised and praised as the one who has descended to earth repeatedly in suitable forms for the removal of rampant evil and the re-establishment of Dharma for human beings. In the last but one stanza, He is seen as the Bridge that alone helps us to cross the ocean of life.
In the Sri Sathya Sai Suprabhatham the approach is quite different. The six ‘Good Mornings’ are respectively said by:
Depending upon the levels of consciousness, different interpretations may be read between the lines of Sri Sathya Sai Suprabhatham.
For example, one devotee wrote in “Sanathan Sarathi” magazine long ago that the six stanzas actually refer to six stages of spiritual awakening or of activating the spiritual centers inherent in our body. Accordingly, the Chitravathi mentioned in the third stanza represents the skeleton body, with three nadis: ida, pingala and susumna. This is an interpretation welling out of a subjective experience, which when accepted gives a different dimension and meaning to the meaning to the prayer. Devotees who have just begun their journey as spiritual aspirants should sing this Suprabhatham between 4 am and 6 am as a regular spiritual exercise.
However, the maximum benefits may begin to flow only when the meaning is well understood and the implications sought are put into practise in day-today life. As Bhagawan Baba has pointed out, one must try to “awaken the Divinity inherent in everyone, not by preaching, but by the exemplary practise of Truthfulness, Right Conduct, Peace and Love towards every being.” That indeed will be the true Suprabhatham, heralding the dawn of the Golden Age for Mankind!

This is 24th verse from the 4th chapter of Bhagavad Gita. The act of offering is Brahman. The offering itself is Brahman. The offering is done by Brahman in the sacred fire which is Brahman. He alone attains Brahman who, in all actions, is fully absorbed in Brahman. (As we chant this prayer we are offering the different types of food to Brahman).
Aham Vaishvaanaro Bhutva
Praaninaam Dehamaashritha
Praanaapaana Samaa Yuktaha
Pachaamyannam Chatur Vidam
This is 14th verse from the 15th chapter of Bhagavad Gita This sloka is a sort of acknowledgement and assurance to us from Brahman. “I am Vaishnavara, existing as fire God in the bodies of living beings. Being associated with ingoing (prana) and outgoing (apaana) life breaths, I will digest all the four different types of food (that which we bite and chew; that which we masticate with the tongue; those which we gulp; that which we swallow) and purify them.”
Harir Daatha Harir Bhoktha
Harir Annam Prajaapatih
Harir Vipra Shareerastu
Bhoonkte Bhojayathe Harih
Oh Lord Hari, You are the food, You are the enjoyer of the food, You are the giver of food. Therefore, I offer all that I consume at Thy Lotus Feet.
We should partake food with a Sathwic mind. Our ancestors recommended the offering of food to God before partaking. Food so partaken becomes “Prasadam” Prayer cleanses the food of the thre impurities; caused by the absence of cleanliness of the vessel, cleanliness of the food stuff, and cleanliness in the process of cooking. It is necessary to get rid of these three impurities to purify the food; for, pure food goes into the making of a pure mind. It is not possible to ensure the purity of the cooking process, since we do not know what thoughts rage in the mind of the man who prepares the food. Similarly, we cannot ensure the cleanliness of the food ingredients as we do not know whether it was acquired in a righteous way by the seller who has sold it to us. Hence, it is essential on our part to offer food to God in the form of prayer, so that these three impurities do not afflict our mind.
“The food thus offered to God is digested by ‘Vaishwanara” in the digestive system. Since God exists in the form of fire as Vaishwanara, He digests the food along with the impurities. So, man will not be affected even i the impurities enter the food.”
